Where’d it go? It’s not down the side of the couch. And it’s not in the last place you left it. It’s official: you’ve lost your creative mojo. So how do you go about getting it back?
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a wordsmith. Or how much you love the craft of writing. Drawing a blank is something every writer goes through at some time or another. And it doesn’t feel good. Inspiration isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s a crucial part of any writing process.
So if you’re feeling like your well’s run dry, here are three quick ways to get it flowing once again.
Pay Attention
There’s nowt as funny as folk. Especially the funny things they say. So prick up your ears next time you’re out and about. Eavesdropping isn’t something we’d usually recommend, but sometimes you just can’t help it. Next time you’re on a train, plane (or just hanging about in town) pay attention to interesting snippets of conversations. And make sure you jot them down as soon as you hear them.
Be a newshound
You’ll find plenty of inspiration by following world events. But don’t underestimate the usefulness of reading ‘low-brow’ publications too. (Especially if you’re looking for funny real-life stories.) So get your hands on copies of Chat, Take a Break or Reveal and tear out anything you find interesting. Pop them in a scrapbook and dig it out whenever you’re looking for a writing boost.
Scrap the routine
If you’re stuck in a rut, don’t just sit in it and wait. Put down your pen and try doing something completely different. Anything at all. Run swim, watch TV, shop, stare out of the window. So long as it’s a little out of your ordinary routine and you don’t beat yourself up for ‘wasting time’ afterwards. It’s all part of the creative process.
Good luck!
